I'm actually currently employed, and have been for the past 2 months or so! That's a happier situation than during the last post. Unfortunately, this position is only going to last about 2 more weeks and after that I'll be technically unemployed for a month. Then, I will start permanent employment at a daycare.
I've been struggling with my energy levels and mood a lot lately, I barely have enough energy and concentration to get through a whole day. Everything is tiresome and I don't really enjoy most things. I technically quit smoking in the spring, but I have still been smoking on some weekends etc. and almost picked up my earlier habit completely the past couple of weeks. I felt like it helped with my job-related stress, but I don't know. Maybe the current funk I'm in is to do with nicotine withdrawals? I sure hope so. In a regular year, I'll have a period of weeks where I'm in a more "depressive/depressed" mood (I have never been diagnosed or felt the need to make sure with a psychologist/psychiatrist, therefore quotation marks) where I'm low energy and during really bad years I have some suicidal ideation, but it's usually in the spring? So I have no idea what's up with this, I'm usually very content in the winter. It's frustrating.
Part of it is also because I'm expecting to hate my new permanent job. It's with young children, an age group I don't particularly adore, and I'm not very proficient at dealing with them either. At best I'll be able to make it up as I go along. I'll also be moving to another city by myself, and the prospect of living away from my friends is not something I'd consider a positive in accepting this position. But no one else would have me, and in the current economy I'd feel terrible turning down a job opportunity that was literally served to me on a silver platter. Sigh. Let's hope it goes in the direction of the best case scenario, because otherwise next spring is going to be utter hell for me.
Well, onto happier subjects!! I bought a membership for Worldcon 2017 months ago (sometime around February-ish?) and I've been planning all sorts of cool cosplays for it:
- Star-Lord 4.0 / I'll try to finish all my improvements by then
- Coma the Doof / With flame-throwing guitar prop! And complementary flame-design ukulele to carry inside the con!
- Brienne of Tarth / I'd really REALLY like to cosplay Brienne! She's one of my favourite GoT characters. I also feel like her armour (basically a breastplate, shoulder plates and boots?) could be craftable with my current prop-building skills.
- Orc Arch-Mage / I'd be using my pre-existing Skyrim Arch Mage costume, just fix up some parts of it. And I would carry the Krosis mask instead of wearing it to avoid overheating, and wear orc makeup and fangs instead!
- costume 5 (I have like 6 different options lined up but I might not carry any of them out! It's possible that I'll just have a day of Not Dressing Up As Anything. Maybe the first day, so I can figure out the layout of the place, prop rules and regulations and such things first? Hm. I'll have to consider it)
Also, Jay Gatsby is bringing Party Like Gatsby to my city! I'm so pumped. I can finally justify buying a men's threepiece suit in black too, heh. I'm going to try and find secondhand items that would at least somewhat match the 1920's theme, but I'll be happy with almost anything that I can modify to my own size, really. At least I already have a white shirt, acceptable shoes (if I can't find nice shiny ones), elastics for sleeves, a fedora and an old pocket watch that I could incorporate! I'll try to match everything as well as I can, but I don't want to be spending super unreasonable amounts of money on this costume, since they're not going to forbid my entrance if the clothes aren't 100% theme-accurate or anything. I already know that at least one of my friends is definitely coming, so I bet we'll have a lot of fun!
For now I think that's all I wanted to write about.

What happened here, ha. I got so busy with graduation and everything that I haven't updated in a really long time! Oh well.
I ended up abandoning the Groot-cosplay-for-Tracon-2016 idea, I'll try to build that cosplay for a later event (I'm hoping I could do it for Worldcon 2017, but we'll see). I ran out of time and money...
In the meantime, I fell back into the realm of kpop, and I fell hard. Basically I randomly ran across a group called Seventeen and they pretty much took over my life immediately and here I am 10 months later and probably thousands poorer. But supporting them makes me happy and gives me something to concentrate on although I still don't have a job, which would otherwise be an absolutely terrible bummer. Well, can't be helped by being miserable.
I did one camp as assistant camp leader, and I'm leaving for another camp next Monday. There's always some pay involved, so that's nice. And it's technically work in my own field, so it's always a bonus. The bureau of employment is paying me some support too. I'm doing okay. I wish I had something more relevant to do with my time, but no one even wants to call me for an interview, it seems. I have a possible solution lined up that I'm looking into this summer, so it's fine. I'll try to find work through an agency that "rents out" workers for short periods of time, in the field of social work. I don't have much experience working with children, but I'm sure I'll be able to get at least a few days' work in through there. Once I have a job, I could possibly move into my own apartment and then I'd have more leeway to earn a living without screwing myself over with the unemployment benefits... Sigh.
I did build Nux for Desucon, though! It looked great, or so I think. I didn't go all-out with the SFX makeup, and even then the cosplay took me about 4 hours to put on and 1,5 hours to take off... and the sportstape bindings I had on tore off some skin as well. But I'll do it a bit more sensibly next time, and at least I know my limit when it comes to how long a high-stress cosplay such as Nux can be worn. Sitting was also slightly troublesome, because I couldn't breathe at 100% all of the time, since I put on the bindings while standing up. I didn't really get any proper pictures, but I'll make sure to get some from Tracon! Hopefully I'll have at least a Capable cosplaying along, but we'll see ~

#67 Cosplay plans
Hiya!
It's been a while again, what a surprise. I was so busy for a couple of weeks there it isn't even remotely funny. I visibly lost weight - but I was able to get my cosplay done barely in time for Tracon X and had a great weekend, despite some people-related hiccups and this time not even popping into a single program or lecture... I gotta work up to that next year. I'm genuinely bummed because I didn't go listen to some stuff. Ugh. Oh well.
I might go to Desucon Frostbite next year, as well as Tracon XI of course and maybe the summer Desucon as well. Oh, and Popcult Helsinki. We'll see. I honestly have no idea as to what I'll be doing after the year is over and I graduate, so here's to hoping I guess?
Anyway, my cosplay plans are as follows:
Desucon Frostbite: repeat Tracon X:s Archmage/Krosis cosplay from Skyrim. Finally I get to wear this costume in more appropriate weather!
Popcult Helsinki: Repeat of said Skyrim cosplay, but with a friend who's going to make a cosplay of the Saviour's Hide (F) armour in Skyrim.
Desucon: Nux from Mad Max Fury Road (possibly with Capable? not sure yet)
Tracon XI: Groot on one day, a Nux + Max + Capable/other wife group cosplay on the other
Currently I'm trying to work out how I could build the steering wheel from the movie for Nux and how I could possibly get the Groot costume to work... because I need platforms and the planning will need to be good to make sure I can still walk and remove some parts to go to the toilet etc. And I need to be able to DO SOMETHING with my hands while in costume. Ugh. We'll see. But at least it looks like I'll be able to order some specific car parts to build this thing:
I could build it entirely out of foam or other more easily available materials, but it a. wouldn't look great and b. would be considerably less durable. If at all possible, I want to be able to attach this thing to my costume so I don't actually have to hold it in my hand the whole time. Obviously I also have to buy some silver decorative cake spray for funsies (and Valhalla).
I'm also getting some decent body camouflage palettes now, and looking at what I could use to build Nux's scarifications and how I could conceal my binding when I wear the costume. I'm doing a Nux that is wearing Mad Max's jacket just in case I end up simply going with sports tape, but I really want to build a "prosthetic skin" part that I could stick over the binding to make it blend with my skin better. I'll see. Probably will be posting updates here sometimes, since I actually have a year's time to work up to the cosplay! I already went and bought a used leather jacket for ~15€ that I can use to distress, it just requires some modding and the shoulder pad. Most of the other stuff Nux wears ("army"-esque pants, pilot goggles etc) I'll be able to buy off a used army equipment reseller in Finland, so that's great. I also have some super dinky old army boots I can use for the costume, even though they're not completely accurate to the source material (you can see on one of the Nux pictures above, he's wearing some sort of laced shoe alright, but it doesn't look like an iron-toe boot). At least I'll get use out of them.
I'm of a relatively proportionate body type, but I want to be able to pull of a "shirtless skinny man"-look in a decent way - so I started working out. Nothing too grand, a 5km jog and bodyweight/muscle exercise every other day. I'll see if I progress into something more challenging at some point. Really I just want to work on my stomach muscles and arms, but I figured why not build my base fitness level up while I do that.
That's mostly what I've been up to... I don't know whether or not I should make a cosplay-building post similar to the one I did on Star Lord with my Skyrim cosplay? I have pictures from the process, I just did it so quickly (a similar-length preparation period as with Star Lord, only about 5 times as much to build and get done) that I don't know the process will be very coherent.. but if someone is curious about, say, how I did the Daedric War Axe or Wabbajack, since I didn't go exactly according to a tutorial this time, I could do that? I don't know. I'll probably end up doing something to that effect anyway, since I want to keep the posts as reminders to myself as well.

I'm not sure I'd even be able to recap everything that's happened since the last post, seriously.
Mad Max was freakin' epic, though. Also I'm now through with my summer job - in other words, the thing that's taken most of my time since late May. I have my wages to save and spend, and now I have to get on with my Skyrim costume for Tracon X big time. We have yet to figure out parking for the weekend in question (aka whether or not the cost is reasonable enough for us to even drive up there) because the Internet is being a contradictory little shit. What a surprise.
Between the 3rd and 4th camps I worked at, I replaced my old-as-balls-iPod with a new iPod Touch. I've gotta say, I really didn't need any features besides playing music, but the Nano and Shuffle (or whatever the tiny ones are called, I don't even know) only come in up to like 16GB max, which... well, suffice to say, in 7 years I've grown used to 120GB+ and by default my library has about 60+ gigs of music that I want on a player. So. There's that. Also now I have like about 1000 songs I've apparently misplaced (on my computer) and I need to re-download a bunch of music from like 2007-2010. I've probably changed computers enough times to have lost the oldest music files...
I'm struggling with some concert stuff - there's a Pariisin Kevät concert the day we're supposed to travel to Tre for Tracon, and I kinda sorta REALLY REALLY WANT TO GO. But then I'd have to drive up at night and conventions tend to be very tiring even with a solid night's sleep. Sigh. Also, later in the year, Children of Bodom have a gig with Lamb of God as their support, which kind of makes me drool - and Sabaton is playing at Barona Arena apparently on the day I'm supposed to graduate. If that's not a sign saying I should go, I don't know what is.
Today I was downloading some random stuff I wanted back on my iPod, and since I just watched the latest Teens React - Lyrics Breakdown and it was about twenty one pilots, who I've been meaning to check out anyway, I decided to look into them a bit. And basically now I have their entire discography. Oh dear. Lane Boy in particular appeals to me - both the aesthetic of the video and the song. 21PFTW!
Wow, that acronym was so lame.
Anyway, my weekend is full of activity - Saapas patrol on Friday, mass training and Ant-Man on Saturday, and on Sunday there'll be confirmation mass and parties plus my friend's send-off to study in Hong Kong - and school's officially starting on Monday, so it might be a while until I post again! Toodles!

#65 - Age of Ultron, Popcult & Star Lord 3.0
Okay so two months in recap.
- Finished my last trainee period and did pretty well
- My thesis work is moving forward at a decent pace
- I'm only a bit behind on schoolwork
- My summer job is going to take almost all of the 2,5 months I technically have off from school
- Said summer job is also going to pay a decent wage so I can save up some money and replace my phone, though, so there's that
I've been pretty much drowned in schoolwork, really. I have over 30 book loans just from the campus libraries of my school, plus others from various city libraries. Sigh. But I've also been moderately productive so that's great.
I finished reading It's Kind of a Funny Story. It wasn't really up my alley I guess? Some of my friends were praising it but it left kind of a bad taste in my mouth. I don't really even know why. Some of the characterisations and the protagonist's narrative just irritated me too much to enjoy it a lot, I guess.
I bought Majora's Mask 3D which is great, because it has those "older LoZ games"-esque qualities of actually having some interesting puzzles and other things that are very satisfying to figure out as you play. I haven't played through it yet, because first I started trying to catch up in Animal Crossing: New Leaf (which I hadn't played since mid-November and I wanted to not lose all my fancy hybrid flowers. Hashtag priorities.) and went on a sort of Fantasy Life binge in between all of that as well.
Moviewise: Cinderella was super clichéd (I don't know why anyone would expect otherwise to be honest) but really cute. Richard Madden was a prince to die for. Also I enjoyed Into the Woods immensely.
Then. THEN.
AVENGERS - AGE OF ULTRON FINALLY CAME OUT! This has been expected for 3+ years. So awesome. I've seen it 4 times in the cinema so far. I really enjoyed it - although there were some less-than-awesome aspects that I do recognize. The Maximoff twins were amazing, too. Sigh. The Vision is basically my life now. I cosplayed Wanda to the premiere (we went with a Marvel cosplay group) and essentially I channeled the heck out of her by having all of the feels. I've never considered myself much of a Paul Bettany stan but damn. Afterwards I realized that the same man has also played Silas in The Da Vinci Code, who was kind of a weird character to root for but still. And he played Dustfinger in the Inkheart film adaptation, which means that he literally is my ultimate literary mancrush. The whole Vision thing makes a lot more sense after that. Ha.

The weekend of the AoU premiere was Popcult Helsinki. I really enjoyed the event! I went as Scarlett Witch / Wanda Maximoff on Saturday and used my Star Lord cosplay on Sunday. I took my portable speaker with me and blasted some tunes from Awesome Mix Vol. 1, naturally. We also had a sort of informal "Marvel photoshoot" in the park near the venue on Saturday, and a more planned photoshoot with my friend who was cosplaying Doctor Strange on Sunday. I don't have pictures from the Marvel shoot as of yet, but here's us on Sunday:
I kind of really like the pictures... I do wish the person who had those pictures from Saturday would upload them somewhere though. Oh well.
A Finnish youtuber called eerahwave also included me in her video collage of Sunday's cosplays! Being included basically made me irrationally happy, ha.
Right now I'm looking forward to finishing my remaining schoolwork, seeing Mad Max - Fury Road in theaters, and enjoying my almost 2 weeks off before I start working.

OH GOD, MY BACK IS SO SORE.
Also, I didn't notice I had Caps Lock on at first. Well, in retrospect I figured the emphasis was only appropriate.
I was at a student bar/pub crawl thing. We had fun. I ate the best hamburger I have ever had before we went to bed.
Also I watched the 100 season 2 finale today, it was so bomb. I can't wait for season 3 to start in the fall. I have lost all hope for any redemption of Teen Wolf's future, it's just been a downward spiral since the second season ended, basically. Eh. I'm sad, because I feel like the early days of the show were phenomenal and it had so much potential. Thankfully it introduced me into really great actors and some awesome people from the fandom as well - before all the drama started to really hit the fandom, too. It was a wild ride, I actually originally went on tumblr. specifically because of TW. Sigh.
Today I received It's Kind of a Funny Story and High-Rise in the mail... they were the exact same size, which was very pleasing to me, ha. I'm trying to finish The Infinite Sea right now, and then I might move on to one of those.
I'm going to see the new Cinderella on Friday aka tomorrow, probably. I don't know yet. We'll see...
I don't even know what I'm thinking right now, I just felt like making a post here although I don't have much to say really. Ha. Oh! I think I might don my Star Lord costume again for the Popcult event next month - assuming that I can even afford to go. There are two birthday parties I gotta go to on the next 2 weekends. I think that I might actually just mainly stay sober and party on like that, because I don't have too much money to spare. And since I've been on a cruise and then 3 separate party/dancing events and occasions this year already, I feel like my quota has been filled for quite a while. Of course I'm going to go and have fun with my friends on their birthdays, but I just won't drink. I did it for tons of people's housewarming parties back when I started at uni, it shouldn't be too hard now. And I kind of want to use money for some other things except pouring it down my throat, let's be real here.

I feel like I always start my posts by whining about either how long or how little time it's been since the previous post. Hashtag so original. IT HAS BEEN QUITE A WHILE THOUGH.
I watched season 2 - or what I thought was the entirety of season 2 - of the 100 on Couch Tuner, only to find out the whole thing hadn't aired yet. Anyone else who has bingewatched shows at a pace of like one season a day knows the struggle of suddenly having to wait a whole month for the remaining 4 episodes. Still, I haven't been let down yet - even though the start of season 1 isn't that strong except for an interesting premise (even the characters are pretty weak in the beginning, in my opinion) it's only been improving the further we go into the second season. The writers of the show have this knack for the characters staying true to themselves and still managing to develop, and there are lots of dramatic plot twists. They are always supremely painful yet completely logical and reasonable. One of my favourite things in this show, really. I ordered the books the show is loosely based on: for once, the show is like way better. If post-apocalyptic slightly YA-ish plots and shows interest you, definitely check out the TV version in stead of the novels. I've only read 1/3 so far, and I'm not too impressed.
Speaking of being impressed by books: first of all, I've been reading more Joe Hill. I don't remember if I talked about NOS4A2 yet, but it was a m a z i n g. A definite recommendation for someone who enjoys horror and/or Stephen King-esque novels. I also read The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, which is some more post-apocalyptic YA thing. Notice a theme here? Hah. Anyway, it has aliens and shit. It's great, especially if you're like me and like to consume entertainment at a pretty rapid pace instead of overthinking it. I think the novel's plot is good, but apparently some of the twists are really obvious to people. I whisk through books so fast it wasn't an issue for me, but maybe something to think about. There's also going to be a movie about it, which will be released sometime in 2016. I have the sequel, but I've been dreading starting it because the third novel won't be released until somewhere in the fall. Hng.
We went out clubbing for a bit last weekend, again. I also caught a cold again. Thankfully I didn't do any significant damage to tendons anywhere this time, though. I did wear some heels (like barely 2" since I usually don't wear heels, but it's still quite a change from flats/combat boots) so basically my thighs and calves were sore as hell the next day. It felt like quite a workout. Also I think the same young-ish Turkish guy tried to snuggle me on the dance floor like 5 times. Sigh. But hey, J's little sister turned 18 (that's why we were partying) and apparently she had a lot of fun, so all's well that ends well! I kinda want to revisit my favourite gay club at some point, too. Have to drag my friends there sometime - we've been going to the same place lately, because they have free entry until midnight and that's just... handy as heck. So. We'll see.
I don't know if I was going anywhere with this. I kind of really want to buy some NYX cosmetics right now, though. Or maybe Sleek would have some nice highlighters? I have tons of eyeshadows and even some lip colours now, I kind of need to get on track with lip pencils though. I don't know. And I haven't been able to find a more natural-looking foundation that suits me yet. Ugh. I'm thinking about trying some BB/CC cream by Gosh that someone on the internet recommended because it's vegan. Oh dear. Also, can I just point out that it's super irritating when I watch some US/UK beauty vloggers talk about their favourite (especially drugstore) products and there is literally no way to get them to Finland? The stores don't carry them, online drugstores don't ship to Finland and neither do most Amazon or eBay sellers. The struggle is so real. Well, I'll see if there's a NYX foundation some people like, maybe I'll just accidentally order some other products on the side too.... Tee hee.

Hey!
I just felt like typing something right now. I haven't exactly been on top of my stuff for this past week. Last Saturday we had a kind of collective birthday/cocktail party. It was very icy outside and I was wearing Converse (smart, I know) and walking really carefully. Then on one of the few areas where there was no ice aka on some stairs to the subway, I stepped sideways on my ankle and something snapped. We were headed out and I - obviously - didn't stop to do anything about it until about 4 hours later when we got back home. By then I had a fist-sized bruise on the outside of my ankle and it was swollen to about twice the normal width.
I tend to get quite a lot of minor ankle injuries because of the 6 years of track and field I did a while back. I snapped tendons left and right - which means that while I might be more likely to injure myself on the ankles, the injuries will rarely result in torn ligaments or tendons because they're stretched from before. But yeah, I've been wearing a support bandage on the bad ankle for most of last week. Then on Tuesday I noticed I'd caught a cold, so I've been doubly indisposed. Ugh.
Luckily this week was kind of our unofficial winter holiday - we don't actually get one at Uni levels of education, except for Christmas - so I didn't have to try to internalise new information at school except for about 2 hours on Wednesday, ha. Also I don't have a lot to do when it comes to our current group assignments so all I'll have to do is take care of an old, overdue thing that's just my own.
I started watching The 100 on Netflix yesterday evening, and I'm about half an hour away from the end of season 1. Thank Jeebus I can continue to the second season my loyal streaming site, and I don't have to wait for months until it appears on Netflix... Eh. I'll get over my slight moral aversion to watching series illegally at some point I guess. Next plan is to watch Agent Carter on Hulu, maybe, because I believe certain TV networks also count Hulu views as legitimate views on shows that I couldn't legitimately watch yet. Eh.
I'm also going to get the Fifty shades series into my hands, so I can make sure my arguments about Christian Grey & Anastasia Steele's abuser/victim relationship are legitimate. Don't get me wrong now, BDSM is a-ok to me (I also like reading fiction that includes elements of it, except I have some criteria when it comes to quality and character archetypes) but Fifty shades is just abuse cloaked as responsible BDSM practice and even romance, for fuck's sake. Whatever, there are plenty of reasonable sources who take apart the entire series for it's horrendous misrepresentation of BDSM not to mention romanticising and idealising a toxic relationship that seems to mirror, for a majority of the time, very closely what an emotionally manipulative abuser does to their victim. Seriously, it's so cringe-worthy. I feel bad. But I'm still going to read them so that any of my arguments can't be "refuted" (in the defenders' minds) as ill-informed. Again, as with any other problematic media, I'm not telling anyone to boycott anything they enjoy - go see the movie, buy the books, whatever floats your goat.
What I want is a media-critical stance where consumers a. are informed enough to recognise problems when they see them or b. they are suspicious enough to do research about things they are interested in. Boo-hoo, it's harder to enjoy things that way. But it's also the only way to be an actually responsible media consumer.
Anyway, that's enough ranting for now, seriously. I'm going to go back to watching the season 1 finale of The 100.

Oh my god, I am so caught up on my ish, you wouldn't believe.
Only one assignment left, and that one I just have to improve it a bit by actually sourcing things. Ay.
Also I finished reading the Finlandia Literary Prize -winning novel of 2014, and it was really good. The three main characters all had distinctive, realistic narratives and the plot development was great in my opinion. If you can read Finnish, I definitely recommend it! He eivät tiedä mitä tekevät by Jussi Valtonen. Ugh. Really good though. I've read two Finnish novels in a row this month, it must be a record. Ha. But now I'm starting Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, so there goes that streak.
Our lectures were kind of irritating and mind-blowingly dull today. We have to write a communication plan and some kind of article-like piece and actually try to get it published in some local newspaper - because our Uni of AS is funded based on published works. So they make us write up articles 90% of us don't have a relevant subject to work on for, just in case it'll improve the funding. Great academic goals they're setting, huh? Oh well, that must kind of be the reality of difficult economic situations, I guess.
I started actually playing AC:Pirates on my iPad. The writing is atrocious (as was to be expected, it's not like it's and actual AC game) but the character design is pretty nice, and I love the gameplay where you get to sail your ship around. All in all, I think it's a pretty good tablet / mobile gaming format, and the graphics you can run on tablets and smartphones surprise me positively sometimes.
Right now basically the only reason I'm writing a post is that both my tablet and phone had software updates available, so I'm waiting for those to finish downloading and installing. We'll see if the phone update makes all my keyboard shortcuts disappear again, like they've done with all past updates since iOS 8. FYI: If you have this same problem with keyboard shortcuts (the list) disappearing from your Settings > General > Keyboards > Shortcuts, try turning Predictive keyboards off and on again. It seems to work for me. Some people have also reported that the problem of the shortcuts remaining in the phone as a list but not showing up when you type can be sorted out with the same solution. Of course, all of this information and various other possible solutions can be found on the Apple discussion forums but I thought I'd share it here in case someone else is struggling with this.
I'm sorry I keep talking about how "well" I'm doing at school right now, I'm just really proud of myself. Also, in case someone is interested, I added all of my social medias into my profile.

Whoa, I'm up to 60 posts on here. Welp.
I'm currently waiting for my dad to fix the WiFi upstairs, this is a little ridiculous. I've had to use my phone's crappy 3G for everything, and it keeps running out of the allotted amount of data transfer at the highest possible speed. I've had to order 100 Gb of extra data transfer during the past 25 days. WHY?
Eh well, I was going to finish another assignment today but it looks like that won't be happening. I was getting interview answers from someone to base the assignment on, but I haven't received the answers yet. Luckily, it's just an "orientation assingment" so it's mostly about collecting your thoughts concerning a subject the group is going to learn about. Pity that this particular study module is already over by now, but oh well. I'll do it anyway. I'm literally 1 assignment away from having zero overdue assignments, I'm so glad.
The two things I really wish I had more time to do right now, is playing video games and reading books. Thankfully I've been able to make solid progress on the book I'm currently reading (last year's Finlandia Literary Prize winning novel by Jussi Valtonen) and I'll be able to start a new one after that. I have a bunch of Tolkién books and Gone Girl as well as other interesting stuff to get into.
I went shopping for electronic acceessories today, ha. Both my lightning to USB cable and the older 30 spike cable for my iPod Classic were pretty bumped up, so I bought replacements. My new fancy lightning to USB is 2 metres long - The MOTHER OF ALL CABLES. Honestly, I think it's a bit too long to be super practical in many situations, but if the sockets elsewhere suck as much as on my current campus, I'll have use for it. I'm thinking I might also want to buy the 1 metre version for more regular use. Since my phone and my iPad use identical cords, it's not that unreasonable to have some extra cables on hand in my opinion. Also, I bought a Battery Pack (one of those recharge-on-the-go doodaddies) of 5200 mAh, which should technically be enough to charge my phone at least once from 0 to 100%, possibly almost twice. Yas.
I'm slightly weirded out by technology right now though - my MacBook is bleeping and blooping about received iMessages, since they now work on my computer as well. So strange.
Whatever, that's all for now!

I haven't really had the time to work in more details on the Star Lord post, to be honest. Ha.
Anyway, I'm starting to get my overdue assignments in order, and my thesis process is going along at a decent pace. The only thing I have to worry about now is finding a place where I could do my practical training this spring. I'm going to try to get it into the same place where my thesis is based in, so I could maybe work on that during practical training as well (or, actually, building the material our thesis will be examining could literally be my practical training. It all depends on what they'd want me to do, really).
I went to see Big Hero 6 with my friends last weekend, and I enjoyed it a lot. I was cracking up so much during the film, you wouldn't believe it. Baymax is the best. I think getting major worries through even minor milestones really helps my motivation. I don't feel so hopeless now that I've dealt with most of the yet-to-be-completed study modules or I have a plan for how I'm going to deal with them. The only problem at this point is that I can't seem to get in contact with one of the teachers who graded one of the assignments I got back with a "needs to be improved" comment. Eugh. Well, it's just one assignment and I got the green light to deal with it this spring.
Whatever the event may be, I usually end up coordinating at least some of it. Group assignments, movie nights... etc. I don't really mind, I enjoy it. I think I also have kind of a knack for doing the organising. I might not have the most new or innovative views on what methods to use for the most remarkable outcome, but I do get shit done. There is not one group assignment that has been handed in late - because of my lack of doing it within a proper time frame, at least. I'm pretty happy about that. Although it seems like even the most sloppy students in my "class" really pull themselves together for group assignments, since no one wants to let other people down. I figure that's a pretty good view of it: you can fuck up your own studies as much as you want by missing deadlines on personal assignments, but if you do that with group work I'm going to cut a bitch.
Well, this has been a spectacularly rambling post. I'll be off now.

Anyway, I'm starting to get my overdue assignments in order, and my thesis process is going along at a decent pace. The only thing I have to worry about now is finding a place where I could do my practical training this spring. I'm going to try to get it into the same place where my thesis is based in, so I could maybe work on that during practical training as well (or, actually, building the material our thesis will be examining could literally be my practical training. It all depends on what they'd want me to do, really).
I went to see Big Hero 6 with my friends last weekend, and I enjoyed it a lot. I was cracking up so much during the film, you wouldn't believe it. Baymax is the best. #58 - HORNS
Hey!
At some point during September or October, I read a novel called Horns by one Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King. The book was one of the best I've ever read. I think I've mentioned it here before, as well? At any rate, if you're interested in a book that's a combination of crime thriller, dark fantasy and theological philosophising, try that one. I literally read it in under 7 hours. People say certain books "can't be put down" - that was actually true for this one.
Anyway, since it was close to Halloween - although we don't really celebrate it here in Finland - I got the inspiration to do a costume centered around some latex horns. Petrilude has a really good tutorial on how to make these in general and what you need, and I've pretty much done the same. Anyway, here's a pretty thorough run-through of what I did before Halloween.
Firstly, you need some equipment for this. Clay or something close to it is good for building a model/base for your latex prosthetic. Then you're going to need some liquid latex - I bought mine at Punanaamio and used a transparent one. I bought a 500ml bottle, which is definitely enough - even 100ml could work if you were making a rather small prosthetic. The Grimas Liquid Latex is available in a skin-tinted formula as well. I haven't tried it, but I imagine it would be easier to mask. In addition to these, you're going to need cheap, single-use sponges. Latex is pretty much going to ruin anything you use to apply it, so you might want to try and find cheap art brushes or even a 20-pack of grocery store brand makeup sponges, whatever suits you.
What I did was creating clay models of what I basically wanted my horns to look like.
For hair, I just decided to tease my hair to turn it into a "mane" of sorts. One of the horns ended up drooping a little - I think the prosthetics were a bit too big or I overstuffed them with filling. Anyway, it was pretty cool. Random people commented as we went by like "Shit, it's Satan!". Hashtag life goals. My two friends had on skull-inspired makeup as well. We went clubbing and then home. The meagre amount of people in actual costumes was kind of saddening, but at least we had fun!

I left my clay forms to dry for a day or so - if you make thinner ones just leaving them overnight should be fine.

After the clay models were dry, it was time to start painting layers of latex on top. To make your prosthetic thick enough to stick out of your face, you need a thicker layer of latex in comparison to, say, scar prosthetics or textured skin. It took me the better part of a week to do enough latex layers.

Also as an FYI, there's going to be some leftover latex from whatever container you use to hold it while you paint. You can just roll it off and throw it out, it's rather low-maintenance. The smell can be very unpleasant though, so if you can, try to make your latex prosthetics in a well-ventilated area!

On the day (October 31st) I was done with my prosthetics, and did the rest of my "costume". I also utilised some elf ear tips from Punanaamio. These are also by Grimas, although they're foam latex. The model is number 32, in case you want to get the same ones elsewhere.

Here's me in the middle of makeup. I also covered my eyebrows, painted the ear tips grey and put them on, and did some cartoony face decorations for a kind of gargoyle/demon look. Inspiration for the makeup also came from a look done by Petrilude.

Anyway, Halloween was a lot of fun even though one of my horns kept almost falling off, and dancing while wearing a pair of wings in a crowded club was kind of a pain. I'd definitely suggest trying to make shorter / skinnier horns if you ever decide to utilise latex prosthetics!

It's been a while since I posted anything.
Basically I took a month off from everything (except wrapping up some schoolwork and working on the improvements for my Star Lord costume). I think it was good for me! Not that keeping up a blog (especially when this is more of the journal sort, instead of an active community where I'm required to post for followers) is a big burden, but I just couldn't be bothered to think up stuff to write here, basically.
Christmas happened. What a surprise. I just had a regular kind of quiet Christmas at home with my family and my sister's dog. M is now a 6-month-old perky little Yorkie puppy! He's great. I still wouldn't want a pet of my own, though, but thankfully my sister lives away from home so I don't really have any beef with her having one. I got the UK edition of Cards Against Humanity from my parents, which was awesome. Also some other miscellaneous gifts.
I also spent NYE at home. I've spent the day on a camp for the past 5 years in a row, so it was sort of a strange experience to be home for it for once. Again, I just stayed home. What I consider a great achievement is that I completed Outlast, the Whistleblower DLC and Bioshock: Infinite during the holidays. I also played quite a lot of Far Cry 3. I hadn't really had time to play anything during the autumn, so it was nice to be able to spend some time on games I'd been neglecting for a while.
School started, and I'm trying to work as hard as possible to catch up on the few remaining overdue assignments that I still have. One of them - originally a group assignment - was luckily also overdue for one of the other students in my group, so I can finish it up with her and the amount of required writing was subsequently halved. Yes!
On the subject of assignments, I'm actually at the Helsinki campus library at the moment, working on my report from the work placement period of last fall. I found some good source material, and returned books I was using for my papers on contextual theology and multicultural work in the Evangelic-Lutheran Church earlier - I got the best possible grade for both of those, by the way. I'm pretty proud. Also I did rather well in our professional English course, so that's good.
I was going to go to Taizé again next spring, but that plan was kind of cancelled. Only a couple of people ended up wanting to go, and I wasn't that excited about going with them. Also the logistics of taking the trip there changed, and I wasn't too fond of them. But oh well, I can always go again later with some friends whose company I know I'm going to enjoy a lot! Also I now have some extra money left over, because I'd saved up for the plane tickets to Geneve earlier. I'm currently debating whether I should buy either a Wii mini, an used Wii, or the Wii U possibly before the summer. I've had J's hand-me-down Wii for over a year, and haven't been able to get it to work. Damn.
Anyway, I think I'm going to work on my report for now. In case someone who's interested in my Star Lord costume improvements, I'm going to edit them into that masterpost from September at some point. Mostly I got some new props and modded them a little bit. But I do have suggestions on where to buy them, etc. so hold out for that!

Hi there!
It's been a while since I wrote anything. The last few weeks at my practical training/work placement ended up being rather hectic. I also learned a lot, so that's cool!
A gender-neutral marriage law has been passed in Finland, on a Friday about 2 weeks ago. So far it's gotten through 2 major votes, so basically it will probably be written into law. The parliament approved it in general and the grand legislation committee approved it with a majority vote as well. At this point they've started writing up the legislation that will be affected by the changes in this upcoming marriage law, and they'll re-approve it in the parliament a couple years from now. Honestly what I find really interesting about this whole process is that this is basically the first piece of legislation that started as a petition that was approved by the parliament! It would be great if this precedent inspires people to be more active with politics and such.
/ EDIT: I just heard. Some dumbass from "the Finns Party" is making the whole parliament vote on this again. What in the world. I'm pretty sure the majority hasn't changed in this two-week period, this is just super frustrating.
I'm currently just hanging around on campus and was just roped to do a spoken English test again, because someone from the group didn't have a partner. Fuck this, as if I didn't have other things to do. Oh well. What're you going to do.
Our cruise's theme this year is movies - guess who's going as Star Lord?! Such a surprise, wow. Anyway, I'm trying to use that costume as much as possible before I put in dreads and will be unable to wear a wig and so on. I've ordered Ravager patches for the coat and decals for the walkman and everything. All I need to do is some paint modding on the walkman, an empty C-cassette and the NERF quad blasters I ordered from Amazon. It should be okay, I guess. I'm super pumped anyway, ha. The general imitation prop I had seen on Entertainment Earth when I was originally making the cosplay had been discontinued/sold out, so I went with the NERF versions. At least I'll have modded Star Lord NERF guns at the end...?

Fanciness galore! I had to leave for a bit to do the spoken English test there, but I'm currently sitting in a thesis seminar. We're now getting our thesis schedule together a bit, we're starting it properly in the spring. Or so it seems, at least.
I have an appointment with an optician this Saturday. I don't really think my lenses are too weak but they're getting so scratched up that I'm seeing less with glasses on than without them. I'll probably also look into some different types of frames, but I'm not sure. I kind of really like the ones I've had for going on 5 years now. It's a habitual thing, I suppose. Kind of like how it takes a while to get used to your own image in the mirror after getting a haircut? Except with glasses your "view" is also different since you can see the frames at all times.
Anyway, I don't have anything important to talk about, really. This was a rather rambling post as is. (The current presenter is speaking in a rather dull and monotonous voice so I figured I'd distract myself. End of this.)

Ay!
I'm not faring too horribly about, I don't know, carrying around clients' stories about their situations, but it's always kind of sad when you hear from a person how basically everything has gone wrong or things that they have no control over have dictated really damaging events. Ugh. At least in me, it doesn't really trigger pity or anything, I just feel really bad and/or angry on behalf of some of the clients here...
OH WELL. Can't change the world overnight. Even though I'm not usually present in the more heavy-duty client meetings (since extra people being present during crisis therapy situations don't really benefit anyone) there was one today that was kind of surprisingly deep. I'm just really glad that even though me, the crisis worker and the client didn't share a native language, everyone (especially in the client's case) was fluent enough in something to make legitimate discussion possible. As far as I know, it's exceedingly difficult to talk about feelings in a language that is not your native one. But especially in the kinds of circumstances some of the clientele have been exposed to, it's legitimately important to be able to discuss feelings and the mental struggle that's part of the healing process.
I feel a bit thrown off, to be honest. I don't usually even get the urge to smoke during the day since there's no occasion to go with anyone (I normally don't notice when the regular smokers go to have a cigarette break), but today I just needed a bit of peace. That's mostly the reason for me smoking in the first place - I don't get nicotine cravings but I think it's just good for my balance to take a few minutes' time out a couple of times a day. Even if I do it while watching videos or there's someone else present (e.g. on campus) it's still a separate thing from working or generally being in a situation where you're responsible for getting shit done.
Oh well, it's only about an hour until I leave. I'm taking some of the extra hours I have to leave earlier today. CASUAL AND UNINTERESTING SHOPPINGU WITH J!! Yeah, my mother saw the tabletop pencil holders/boxes I bought from the bookstore yesterday, so I'm going to buy her some as well. Ha. There was something else I needed as well, but I seem to have forgotten what it is right now, so there's that.
I've also been spending way too much money on Amazon and elsewhere... I bought new fabrics for a redone Tauriel costume (or, rather, my first actual Tauriel costume) including real leather, which, although a fabulous colour and texture, was expensive as hell.
And I've bought, ahem, a number of books. Like, I mean about a dozen.

Little known fact (maybe?): I've owned a "manga tarot" deck for about 10 years. It's pretty but also I would prefer a more classic art style of tarot cards to own at this point.

Okay, so I'm thinking:
The next post is going to be about the latex stuff I made for Halloween, with pictures and everything. Let's see if I can manage to take out my laptop at home as well at some point this week, ha. (I usually just leave it in its protective sleeve inside my backpack because I can't be bothered to put it back in at night and then it ends up taking up some time in the morning... I'm sure you get where I'm going with this. Anyway.)
I've been watching In The Flesh again. Ugh! It's so good. But so irritating. Because even the "nemesis" type characters are very well written, in my opinion at least, so they're very realistic and understandable. It's frustrating how lifelike they are, really. Kieren and Simon though. Squee. (I think I've mentioned their general squee-ness in a blog post earlier, too? What even. I guess it wouldn't be too far-fetched.)
Marvel's epic news have been all over the place lately. I'm pretty sure the "leaked" trailer for Age of Ultron was pretty much planned, because it instantly made everyone really interested in what was up with Marvel Studios. And bam, less than a week later, they have huge announcements to make. Regardless of if it was planned or not, it worked out great, as usual. I'm especially looking forward to the filmatisation of Captain Marvel, when it eventually comes out.
(Also let's just ignore the end-of-the-world references in all these upcoming movies forever, okay?! X-men: Apoca-NOPE!, Thor - Ragnar-NOPE!, Avengers - Infinity Wa-NOPE! Yes, good.)
I have about an hour until some students are going to arrive for a tour of the premises. We're showing them around with the other trainee, apparently. I also spent the morning organising some things for my thesis, which is generally a mess. Well. I hope I can sort it out at some point.

The next post is going to be about the latex stuff I made for Halloween, with pictures and everything. Let's see if I can manage to take out my laptop at home as well at some point this week, ha. (I usually just leave it in its protective sleeve inside my backpack because I can't be bothered to put it back in at night and then it ends up taking up some time in the morning... I'm sure you get where I'm going with this. Anyway.)

Whoa!
I went to see The Maze Runner on the Finnish premiere night, last Friday. I was expecting good things because some fan accounts I've followed on Twitter/tumblr. and elsewhere were happy with the movie, and it got semi-good critic ratings online as well. I went with 8 friends to a showing that started at 11PM.
It was s o g o o d. I just... what. I'm super glad about the postponed release date (from February to September 2014) if it led them to be able to make it this good. My neck and leg muscles were actually sore the next day, because I was tensing my muscles like 90% of the runtime. And I already knew what was going to happen. Some of my friends were super into it too - the movie was just really intense all the way through. I don't know, probably some fans who are more "purists" at nature when it comes to film adaptations probably were a bit disturbed by the differences between the movie and the book, but I think it was a working, whole storyline. Sure, I missed the amoeba-like Grievers I'd imagined in the books, the "floating Maze" illusion, the surveillance critters (and the goddamn telepathic connection between Thomas and Teresa, what happened to that?) but I was still really impressed with the movie. I left the theatre feeling really mindblown, and I really want to go see it again! We also received some discount coupons for movie tickets, I'm internally debating whether to use them for Dracula Untold or another run of TMR.

Also, just saying, I thought the casting all around was really good. I was expecting the main cast to be good, but they actually did deliver really well. Especially Blake Cooper (Chuck) and Ki-Hong Lee (Minho) were super accurate to my character headcanons. I obviously enjoyed the other main Gladers' characterisations as well (Aml Ameen as Alby, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt, Will Poulter as Gally, Kaya Scodelario's Teresa etc.). I just still can't get over the fact that Thomas was supposed to be "ugly as a piece of fried liver on a stick" and he's played by Dylan. AHAHA. I mean, don't get me wrong, Dylan is great, so was his performance, and obviously Hollywood isn't going to put an "ugly" person in the lead of this kind of hero-lead YA franchise. But still. Still.
I literally have nothing else to talk about, to be honest. This week we have the elections for our church council representatives, and I'm gonna vote for someone I know (surprise). I'm not that knowledgeable about how much sway the council members actually have over real issues, but at least I'll know that if they get to vote on some issue that I care about, I've tried to put someone in there whose stance on major issues I can be semi-sure of.
What else is going on this week? The first half of my work placement will be past by the end of the week (5 weeks down, 5 to go!) and I'm feverishly trying to get my latex horns ready by the time Halloween comes around on Friday. We still don't know what we're going to do, though. Oh well.
Tip for people who are planning on making latex prosthetic pieces: don't just mold it how you like according to your face and imagination. Make sure that shit can stand up by itself, because having to paint latex alternatively between two sides of the clay support fucking sucks.

Hey!
I'm writing from work placement again, surprise surprise. It's just that since I'm on my laptop 8 hours a day most of the time and I also have to carry it back and forth whenever I come to work, I don't really feel like setting it up at home in between...
The Maze Runner finally premieres in Finland this Friday. I'm so pumped, you would not believe. I mean, even Rotten Tomatoes gave it 60%+ rating consensus, which is pretty good for what is essentially "another YA dystopia trilogy". I mean, the critics decide if it's rotten or a tomato and they tend not to be the biggest fans of the more teenager-y franchises. (I don't know what the terms for "mostly good"/"pretty much horrible" categories are on RT but whatever.) From the limited amount of tweets and things I've not managed to avoid about TMR, I have the impression that fans liked it but some people thought the directors etc took a little too many artistic liberties? Pretty par of the course for a book-to-film adaptation, to be honest. So the movie might be great or might be horrible. I really want to give the novels another read, but right now I have a ridiculous pile of fantasy books from the library, so I kind of need to read through those first... damn.
I updated to iOS 8.1 and I got the Camera Roll back! Hashtag happy camper. Also what on earth is up with the "recently deleted" folder? When deleting pictures is such a pain to do manually on the iPhone, did it really make sense to Apple to literally keep any deleted image or video for 30 days before it's automatically removed from the phone's memory? I actually had 2Gb's worth of deleted videos and pictures in there, because I hadn't realised that everything actually stays in that folder. Sigh. Oh well, at least there's a "delete all" option for that folder, so you don't really have to do the same process twice. So there's that. My kaomoji shortcuts still refuse to function in most of my social media apps, though. DEVELOPERS PLEASE FIX THIS I NEED STUPID KAOMOJIS LIKE I NEED OXYGEN.
Okay, I know I try to stick to proper grammar on this blog but I feel like the struggle merited a Caps'd sentence, so bear with me on this exceptional day.
I still have no idea what I should do about my thesis. Oops. I'm hoping I can get some tips from teachers the next time I'm going to be on campus... Last year, they had a table available for download with various research subjects that different parties had asked for the school to commission for them. It had all the information - what kind of resources and/or possible pay or funding would be available, when they wanted it done, what they wanted the researching student to be specialising in - and you could contact the people commissioning the research directly. But the only interesting subject on that iteration of the subject table was due the end of this year, which is obviously much too soon considering my thesis schedule. Also I'm pretty sure most of the represented subjects had already found students to do or compile research for them.
I'm looking forward to Halloween a lot this year as well! We sort of have costumes that go together with J & J. I need to start working with the latex to make my horn prosthetics, though! I'm probably going to do a mini-tutorial of a blog post about that here, too, at some point. Probably won't be early enough for anyone to use it this Halloween, but learning about building latex pieces might be useful for someone? Who knows.
Anyway, that's all I have for now. I'll go back to pretending I'm working now, ha ha.

I'm so weirded out that there are at least some views on my posts right now, what even.
Thanks for being interested, I guess? I'd thought this blog was public since almost a year ago, but apparently it wasn't - so the Star Lord Post of Doom also changed that, in a way.
I'm still at my work placement/trainee office, but now I've actually got some projects underway.
I've worked with some clients and we're fleshing out a plan for how to reach the clients that need the work the Multicultural Women's Association is doing. We're going to be visiting Finnish language courses and maternity clinics around the Helsinki Metropolitan area, and introducing the kinds of help and support you can get through the organisation. The clients still show up kind of unpredictably, because the Resource Centre / offices moved to a different part of what is essentially the central area about a month ago.
I bought Shadow of Mordor but I couldn't play it - fail! I didn't even realise it had a mandatory requirement of a 64bit Win OS. Oh well, my dad's upgrading his home office computer soon, and the old one has a 64bit Windows as well as a better graphic card than my gaming PC, so I guess SoM is going to be on my roster within the next month or so. We might end up having both of the computers running simultaneously, so that we don't have to do as much file transferring, though. Ha.
Before I knew there was this kind of easier solution to the gaming PC crisis, I researched a bit about gaming PC builds. I found one that seemed interesting - I think that when I get my own apartment fo' reals, I'm going to build one from scratch. I don't know yet, probably I'll have to prioritise my spending at that point even though I have some money saved up.
Also it might be super handy that J's ex-boyfriend is an electronics technician and he figured out her gaming PC build which is badass so... maybe I can recruit him to help me with my build, too.
I really have no need to buy the latest, most expensive technology - in most cases, the benefits of the latest model in comparison to the second- or third-latest versions of graphics cards and other components is pretty minimal when you take into account the amount of extra money you have to pay for them. Electronics "age" quickly so even a minor decrease in efficiency and a period of, say, a year after release, will significantly decrease the components' price.
Okay, /lecture. Anyway, I'm going back to trying to figure out what I could do today before a functional/practical group session this afternoon.
